Spring Gardening Tips

1. Rake......your yard first needs a brisk raking with a spring leaf rake, this not only removes witer's debris and mice damage, but allows air to circulate around grass plants. This task alone can save many dollars of fungicide applications.

2. Fertilize..........prevent crabgrass, prevent grub damage and the accompanied mole problem. Select a SLOW release lawn fertilizer, the slower the release, the thicker the lawn will be without additional mowing. When selecting a crabgrass preventer decide if you need any reseeding, either skip those spots with your application or use a preventer that is specific for new seeding. When preventing grub damage use a product that contains "Merit" -the only one that works.

3. Spot Seed ....... if you are not using a crabgrass preventer (remember crabgrass multiplies 10 times each year it is not controlled) Select a seed blend that is formulated for your region, use a blend of disease resistant bluegrass, fescues and perennial ryegrass. Scratch the soil first and cover the seed with a film of peat moss or turf starter pellets.

4.Cultivate beds and mulch........use a hand cultivator or mantis tiller and loosen the to a 4" depth. Work in new peat moss to hold moisture and keep soil loose, then apply a slow release plant fertilizer . Keep moisture in and weeds out by applying a 2 " layer of bark mulch. (wood chips decay and rob your soil of nutrients, cedar and cypress last the longest)

5. Prevent weeds... now is time to prevent weeds by applying Preen weed preventer or put down Landscape fabric under the mulch.

6. Prevent bugs....spray dormant oil spray prior to new  leaves coming out. All season oils are sprayed at a heavier more effective rate during the dormant time period.

7. Prepare mower...nothing make a lawn look greener than a sharp mower blade.

8. Review your outdoor living space- if this is the year to hide the neighbors, add a secret garden or pond call the Landscape Design Team early before the backlog puts you weeks  away from making your beautiful garden come alive.
