Landscaping The Plant Doctor The Pond Shop Garden Center Seminars Our Firm

Now that you have Arbordale Professional Landscaping here are some hints to keep it healthy:

WATERING— The most most important factor in plant vitality. You cannot rely on rain or the amount of watering you do for your lawn. Remember that most plants need at least a year  to establish themselves in the landscape. This means they are relying on you to get adequate moisture. Try to water between 5am and 11am to reduce evaporation and prevent fungal diseases. As a general rule a plant that was in a one or two gallon pot requires between 3-6 gallons of water a week in summer. Of course this is not set in stone. Just be careful, a day of light rain is not sufficient for newly planted trees and shrubs. A light rain is considered less than a half inch. Watering of new plantings in dry spells is sometimes necessary for several years.  When leaves are drooping or wilting, most likely your plant needs water immediately!   We recommend new tree plantings be planted along with a 20 gal. tree watering bag. (Gator Bag).  Your reward for installing inexpensive drip irrigation or soaker hoses is a lush healthy landscape for years to come.

NUTRIENTS—During installation your plants were fed with a complete tree & shrub fertilizer. To maintain their health they should be fed every year per the products directions.    Our current recommendation is Osmocote Slow release plant fertilizer for all your gardens.

INSECTS & DISEASE—any time your plants look stressed, yellow or droopy, it is best not guess but to call us immediately.  Our staff will diagnose the problem and recommend a course of action. If the problem is severe it is faster to take samples of good and bad foliage in a ziplock bag directly to our Dodge Road Garden Center. It can be much more satisfying to contact me prior to your plant completely turning brown so we work our magic.

PRUNING—regular pruning is done to maintain a plants shape and vigor. Our landscape staff is available for this service or we offer free classes several times a year at our Garden Center.  The main cause of landscapes not lasting long is incompetent aggressive misshaping by power tools (usually by lawn cutting crews). A quick guide to pruning.

STAKING — any tree we have planted has been staked and wrapped. The wrapping and stakes needs only to be left on for the first year. It is imperative to remove the guy wires before they tighten around the trunk.

WINTER PROTECTION—The garden beds should go into winter with adequate moisture prior to the ground freezing. Plants exposed the southwestern wind will often fair better is protected by a coat of Wilt Stop or burlap screening. Your consultant can advise you if any of your plants are particularly  sensitive. Rabbit, Deer, and mice are in threat in most neighborhoods. A precautionary application of repellant or guards may be prudent. You can either call your consultant, visit our garden center or attend one of our fall classes on winter protection for our latest recommendations.
