it's our Experts that make us Buffalo's favorite Garden Center! The History of Arbordale Arbordale Nurseries was formed in March of 1968 by Richard A. Salmon and his family. Three acres on Dodge Road in Amherst, N.Y. were purchased from the former Lange Topsoil Company, the site had previously been used as a cattle and poultry farm going back to the late 1800's. Richard Salmon had been involved in the nursery business since he was 9 years old , budding roses and the like in suburban Rochester's giant Brown Brothers Nurseries, one of the largest nurseries in eastern United States during the 40's and 50's. As a Rochester landscape designer of some fame in the 1960's he pulled up his Penfield, N.Y.. roots where his family has been since 1880 and moved to Buffalo to start Arbordale Nurseries. In 1968 Richard sold and installed most of the landscape installations himself with the help a few laborers. Shovels were borrowed from a neighbor to complete the first jobs as our first deliveries had not arrived. Weekends his son, Jeff now president would be the installation crew. With the philosophy of giving using only products we would want buy for our home and treat clients the way we want to be serviced, Arbordale grew during the 1970's to 40 - 50 employees. During the famous Buffalo Blizzard of 1977 our entire facilities except the residence/landscape offices were destroyed by fire! A new garden center was built in 55 days and saw record sales gain from a tragic start. In 1979 a new department was formed to distribute commercial outdoor power equipment and a service center was opened. In the late 1980's Arbordale had over 1000 wholesale dealer accounts in seventeen states. These dealers included lawn mower shops, hardware stores, rental stores, and large retailers like Chase-Pitkins Stores and Lesco. In 1985 Arbordale joined American Hardware Cooperative now known as TheTrue Value Company and one of the largest retail store buying cooperatives in the world servicing over 6000 independent stores. In 1988 a group of garden center members formed a co-op inside this co-op of exclusively high service premium garden centers and branded ourselves "Home & Garden Showplace's". Our buying power pools the 300 garden centers orders with nursery and flower growers, and for hardgoods like Scotts products, Weber Grills, and tools we pool our orders with all the Servistar Hardware and Home Centers, True Value Stores, Grand Rental Stations, Taylor Rental, InduServe Supply, and Coast to Coast Home Centers. We save not only in purchasing volume but we also pool shipments coming into Buffalo. Joining the co-op allows us to skip one layer of distribution and allows us to compete with the prices of Box stores where as most of the areas Garden Centers cannot. Collectively our stores sold over 12 billion dollars in 2002. A new garden center building was built in 1990 to make more room for the expanding wholesale distribution business. By the end of the 1990's we exited the wholesale equipment business and put our emphasis back on our core nursery and landscape departments. The lawn mower parts and service department continued to grow with the consumer and we handled warranty service work for almost every large "box" store in Buffalo including, Wal-mart, Kmart, The Home Depot, Valu and others. In 1999 the newer building was sold to Denton, Cottier, & Daniels Piano and Organ business and we finally had a retail neighbor. The nursery area was expanded to the east by several acres, outside checkouts were added, a larger drive through loading area was built, and a new 160 foot greenhouse was erected.. In 2002 we closed the mower repair shop and again expanded the water garden department, the perennial plant department moved back to it's original home and more Landscape Designers joined our staff In 2007 we again expanded our role in the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's finest Prairie House - The Darwin D Martin Complex by adding facilities management to our services Our future rests on building our staff of experts and providing to our clients the same honest value we have shared since 1968. We gratefully thank all those who patronized our business for the last 38 years and we promise to earn your support each time you visit.
Jeffrey A. Salmon, President The Salmon Family since 1968.
